Introduction
The issue I will be talking about is Breast Cancer. I chose breast cancer as my Fire Project issue because it is a rather personal issue for me. On November of 2014 my mother passed away from Stage IV metastatic breast cancer. She had fought the battle for two years until then. Watching the progression of this disease is something that no one should ever be witness to, it’s a vile disease that kills many women slowly and painfully across the world and I feel that people must be educated on its existence and impacts. It is difficult to fathom the pain and suffering that women go through while living with this cancer as well as going through treatment. I feel that this issue is important because breast cancer is a topic that only seems to be important to people in October(Breast Cancer Awareness Month) when women are living and battling against this disease every single day of the year. People claim to support the race for a cure, but do not understand what it really means and figure that buying pink ribbon clothes and accessories make a big difference. Reason I have such a driven passion for this is because this disease took the life of my mother, while leaving me an orphan and having a clear view at the devastation this disease causes to a woman I feel a duty to speak out and present people with the information of this disease while also showing them the reality of its results. Breast cancer is a vastly known disease that is used as a front to make profits, through the pink campaign’s advertising of the pink ribbon and merchandise bearing the pink symbol companies make more profits by selling these items, to make people feel of higher social status because of the idea of helping a cause.
