Only when an issue strikes close to home do we acknowledge it. Diseases like breast cancer show no mercy to those it affects, and sometimes people are naive and think it won’t happen to them or people they love. In our community breast cancer is rampant and here is why. From 2008-2012 Cook County’s breast cancer age-adjusted incidence rate was at 127 per 100,000 women that is higher than the national average of 123 per 100,000. The age-adjusted mortality rate in that 4 year period was 25 per 100,000 which is also above the national average of 22 per 100,000. This data provides a clear idea of how bad breast cancer is in our community.
There are many ways students can get involved in the fight against breast cancer. Organizations like the Metropolitan Chicago Breast Cancer Task Force allow for people to sign up and volunteer through their website at http://www.chicagobreastcancer.org/. Students can also attend the Susan G. Komen foundation Komen Chicago Race for a Cure.
