Root Causes
There is a reason why breast cancer is such a big issue. There are so many levels as to why it has not been stopped yet. Breast cancer is a rampant disease that kills many people. However, despite the casualties, treatment for this disease is extremely expensive. Chemotherapy treatments for breast cancer can cost anywhere from $10,000-$200,000 in total, Radiation therapy for breast cancer costs can range from $7,300-$10,300 depending on a patient’s condition. These prices are unbelievably high, the majority of the population could not afford this kind of treatment. In 2015,the GDP per capita in the United States was $54,629. Looking at the date, it’s clear that a regular citizen couldn’t afford this treatment. These are the signs of a big economic issue when looking at cancer treatment options.
But this wouldn’t be a problem if the government offered this treatment free, at a low price, or even increase the minimum wage. The current minimum wage in the United States is $7.25. The yearly income of an individual that makes minimum wage is $15,080 that is just barely over the poverty line which is $11,945. In the event a person receiving minimum wage is diagnosed with breast cancer it means certain death because of their inability to pay for the cancer treatments.
In, 2013 out of 77.2 million workers that were aged 16 and older 1.3 million worked the exact minimum wage, and 1.7 million worked below minimum wage those 3 million workers that worked at or below minimum wage only made up 3.9% of hourly workers.
There are many reasons why breast cancer even exists and some of which are impossible to deter. Firstly, breast cancer happens “when cells in the breast begin to grow out of control”.
Sometimes it’s simply because of genetics certain genes like BRCA1 and BRCA2 are hereditary and are passed on in a bloodline and when they mutate they increase the chance of a person to contract breast cancer. This is important because it lets us know breast cancer will always but not why it continues to be a problem.
Secondly, breast cancer continues to exists because of unhealthy lifestyles people uphold. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention being overweight, not physically active and drinking alcohol increases the risk of breast cancer.
Finally, breast cancer can be linked to industrialization. According to the previous data shown more developed countries have higher breast cancer incidence rates than less developed countries. Estrogen is a hormone that relates closely with breast cancer developments. Chemicals like xenoestrogen are endocrine disruptors that act like estrogen this further increases breast cancer risk. Polyvinyl Chloride is a chemical that is used in almost everything in the modern world(kid’s toys, credit cards, food packaging, medical supplies, store receipts, and appliances)and is another avenue that increases breast cancer risk. This information is important because the majority of the population is oblivious to their exposure to these chemicals.
Archetypal criticism is applicable to breast cancer because there are many campaigns that support it, the most common and popular of which is the pink ribbon. The pink ribbon has always been a symbol of breast cancer awareness and its symbolism has caused for massive movements towards the fight on breast cancer. This is why it is an archetype.
